Teach your Child with Patience, Even When It Feels “So Simple”

Teaching your little one the ABCs or times tables might seem basic to you, but for them, it’s brand new. And how you respond during these early lessons sets the tone for how they’ll view learning for life.

Why Patience Matters

What feels “easy” to an adult brain is a big deal to a child’s. If they forget or mix things up, getting frustrated or using a harsh tone can cause more harm than help. It might:

  • Make them feel stupid or ashamed

  • Shut down their confidence

  • Create resistance or fear around learning

Children are not trying to annoy you, they’re just trying to understand at their own pace.

But What If They’re Not Taking It Seriously?

Sometimes kids get silly when they’re nervous, bored, or unsure. It’s okay to keep a firm tone, but it should always be wrapped in kindness. You can be serious without being scary.

Try saying:

  • “Let’s focus for now, then we can play.”

  • “I believe you can do this. Let’s try one more time together.”

  • “It’s okay to forget, we’re here to learn, not be perfect.”

How to Teach with Calm + Clarity

  • Lower your voice, don’t raise it – A calm tone keeps their brain open and relaxed.

  • Repeat with kindness – Repetition is how kids learn. Your job isn’t to rush—it’s to guide.

  • Break it down into games – Use clapping rhythms for ABCs, or finger tricks for times tables.

  • Celebrate effort, not just results – “I love how you’re trying!” goes further than “You still don’t get it?” Quick tip: Avoid sighing or folding your arms when you're frustrated—it sends a message, even if you don't say a word.

Final Thought

The goal isn’t just to teach letters or numbers, it’s to help your child feel safe while learning. What they’ll remember most isn’t what they got wrong, but how you made them feel while they were trying.

So even when it’s frustrating, take a breath. You’re not just building their memory, you’re building their mindset.
